An orangery combines the natural light and connection to the garden associated with a conservatory with the substance and comfort of a conventional home extension. It will typically include insulated solid roof areas surrounding a glazed roof lantern, together with masonry walls or columns and carefully positioned windows and doors.
The balance between glazing and solid construction can be adjusted to suit the property and the intended use of the room. The result is a bright, comfortable living space that feels like a natural part of the house and can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Timber gives an orangery warmth, substance and architectural character
that is difficult to reproduce with other materials. Its versatility
allows the windows, doors, roof lantern and decorative details to be
developed around the proportions and appearance of the original house.
Most Kingsholme orangeries are designed and manufactured at our
Bedfordshire workshop using hardwood and Accoya. Making the principal
components together gives us close control over their quality, fit and
finish, while allowing us to create designs for both period properties
and more contemporary homes.
Every Kingsholme orangery is individually designed around the property, its surroundings and the way the new space will be used. We consider the scale and proportions of the existing house, the roof height, the size and position of the roof lantern, views into the garden and the relationship between the new and existing rooms.
Detailed 3D CAD visualisations allow clients to explore the proposed design before construction begins. This helps us refine the proportions, materials, colours and architectural details while ensuring that practical considerations are addressed at an early stage.
An orangery can transform a kitchen into a spacious, light-filled area for cooking, dining and everyday family life. The roof lantern introduces natural light deep into the room, while the solid areas of the roof and walls provide space for lighting, heating, kitchen units and other practical features.
Where possible, much of the new structure can be built before opening the existing kitchen into the extension, helping to reduce disruption and keep the kitchen operational for longer.
For a more contemporary appearance, aluminium provides slimmer frames, larger areas of glazing and clean, understated detailing. Sliding and bifold doors can be incorporated to create wide openings and uninterrupted views of the garden.
Although aluminium projects represent a smaller part of our work, each is approached with the same emphasis on individual design, proportion and attention to detail.
The scope of our service can be tailored to the project. We can manufacture and install the orangery structure as part of a wider scheme managed by others, or provide a complete design-and-build service in selected areas.
Depending on the agreed specification, our full-build service can include design development, planning and Building Regulations work, foundations, brickwork, structural openings, installation and internal finishing. This gives clients one experienced company to coordinate the principal stages of the project.
Kingsholme works primarily in timber, designing and manufacturing hardwood and Accoya orangery structures, windows, doors and roof lanterns at our Bedfordshire workshop. Producing these elements together allows the proportions, joinery details and finishes to be developed as one coherent design.
For projects requiring a more contemporary appearance, we can also create aluminium orangeries with slim frames and generous areas of glazing. Our timber roof lanterns can be incorporated into a complete Kingsholme orangery or manufactured separately for an extension being constructed by others.

The fantastic reviews I see here reflect the experience we have had with Kingsholme. It has been faultless from the first contact through to completion of our orangery. The technical information on the website gave me confidence that the product is outstanding, based on years of experience. All of the team were outstanding, highly experienced tradesmen. The final product is of the highest quality in terms of design, materials and construction. There was absolutely no ‘sales’ involved and during my first call, I was given a ballpark figure based on the size of the space; the final cost was only higher because we increased the size and there were no hidden surprises. The first design we received was exactly what we wanted (they ‘got it’) and the only tweak we made was around the size of a side window. Mark agreed to take on some additional work inside the house, opening up a supporting wall between our kitchen and old dining room. I had struggled to get anyone to take this on, so was grateful to him for doing it. This proved to be quite a challenge for the team based on how the original wall was constructed and took a few more days than expected, however they worked constantly in horrible conditions until it was done. We didn’t have a lot of time to get involved in the project and that wasn’t an issue in the end as everything was taken care for us.
