Kingsholme designs, manufactures and installs bespoke timber orangeries and conservatories for homeowners throughout Cambridgeshire. Whether you are considering a traditional conservatory, a substantial orangery or are simply unsure which style would best suit your property, our experienced team can help you create a light-filled extension tailored to your home and the way you want to use it.
Every project is individually designed to complement the character and proportions of the existing property. We can adjust the balance of glazing, timber, masonry and insulated roof construction to produce anything from an elegant timber conservatory to a more substantial orangery with a glazed roof lantern. Detailed 3D CAD drawings allow you to explore the proposed design and see how the finished extension could look before work begins.
The timber components—including windows, doors, decorative details and roof lanterns—are manufactured in our own Bedfordshire workshop. This gives us close control over the design, materials and quality of the finished joinery. We can also manage the complete project, including planning, Building Regulations, foundations, structural alterations, brickwork, installation and finishing.
The result is a comfortable, practical and enduring addition that brings more natural light into your home while creating a stronger connection with the garden.
Cambridgeshire has a diverse range of properties, from historic homes in Cambridge and Ely to traditional houses in rural villages and modern family homes around the county’s growing towns. This variety makes an individually designed approach particularly important. The proportions, materials and architectural details that suit a period property may be very different from those required for a contemporary home.
A bespoke timber orangery or conservatory should feel connected to the original building. The brickwork, roof form, window arrangements, paint colour and decorative joinery can all be adapted to complement the existing architecture. Where a property has distinctive period features, timber allows us to reproduce fine details and traditional proportions that would be difficult to achieve using standard components.
Homes situated within conservation areas or those with listed status can require especially careful consideration. Planning requirements will depend on the property, its location and the scale and position of the proposed extension. Kingsholme can prepare detailed 3D CAD drawings and assist with the planning and Building Regulations process as part of a complete design-and-build service.
The intended use of the room is equally important. Some clients want to create a larger kitchen and dining area, while others require a family room, entertaining space or quiet place overlooking the garden. Understanding how the room will connect with the existing house helps determine the most appropriate balance of masonry, timber, glazing and insulated roof construction.
Whether the finished design is described as a conservatory, an orangery or a glazed extension, our priority is to create a comfortable and practical room that enhances both the home and the way its owners live.
As a small, independent company based in Studham, Bedfordshire, Kingsholme is well placed to design and build bespoke orangeries and conservatories for clients throughout Cambridgeshire. Our size allows us to provide a personal service, with direct communication throughout the design and construction process rather than passing customers between different departments.
The timber components for each project are manufactured in our own workshop by an experienced team of craftsmen. We can manage the complete process, from the initial design and 3D CAD drawings through planning, Building Regulations and construction to the final finishing work. This coordinated approach gives us close control over quality while making the experience as straightforward as possible for the homeowner.
We provide free, no-obligation initial consultations, surveys and quotations throughout the Cambridgeshire area. To discuss your ideas and receive an initial indication of what may be possible, please call us on Freephone 0800 211 8112.
Cambridgeshire contains a varied mix of architecture, from period cottages and traditional village properties to Victorian townhouses and contemporary family homes. A successful orangery or conservatory should respect the character of the original building rather than appearing to be a standard addition. Its proportions, materials, roof design, window arrangement and decorative details must all be carefully considered.
Timber is particularly well suited to bespoke projects because it gives us the flexibility to create both traditional and contemporary designs. Fine glazing bars, carefully proportioned windows and detailed joinery can complement an older property, while larger areas of glass and cleaner lines can produce a lighter, more modern appearance. Every Kingsholme design is developed around the individual house, its surroundings and the way the new room will be used.
A timber orangery or conservatory can provide space for a larger kitchen, dining area, family room or peaceful garden-facing retreat. High-performance glazing, effective insulation and thoughtful ventilation help create a comfortable room that can be enjoyed throughout the year, while well-positioned windows, doors and roof glazing bring natural light deeper into the home.
Kingsholme designs, manufactures and installs traditional timber roof lanterns for projects throughout Cambridgeshire. A roof lantern can be supplied as part of a complete Kingsholme orangery or installed as a standalone feature within a new flat-roof extension. It can also provide an elegant replacement for an older or poorly performing skylight.
Positioned above a kitchen, dining area or family room, a glazed roof lantern introduces natural light from above and creates a greater feeling of height and space. Every lantern is made to measure, allowing its proportions, glazing arrangement, colour and decorative details to be tailored to the room and architectural style of the property.
Our traditional roof lanterns feature ovolo-moulded rafters and hips manufactured from FSC-certified hardwood. The strength of the timber allows us to use relatively slender sections while maintaining the necessary structural performance, maximising the glazed area and creating a refined appearance.
For improved durability and reduced maintenance, the external components combine aluminium with Accoya. We generally recommend high-performance solar-control glass, which can block more than 80% of solar heat gain while also reducing glare. A self-cleaning coating helps prevent dirt from adhering to the outer surface, making the glass easier to maintain and helping the lantern remain clear.
The initial contact with Kingsholme and the professionalism of the product presentation singled Kingsholme out above other companies considered.
In short, we unreservedly recommend Kingsholme Conservatories as a highly competent company, offering excellent service and value for money, with whom it has been a pleasure to deal.
Colin has helped us throughout the process, and we were very pleased when he suggested another house in Harpenden that we could visit to see the quality of work before placing an order. We also thought your workmen on site were efficient, polite and customer focused.
We appreciated the low-key sales approach, and particularly valued the maturity and attitude of the people who worked on the conservatory.
The workmen were a pleasure to have, always polite and helpful. Mark, your no-pressure sales approach was a welcome change from the so called bigger companies.
My conservatory is much admired by all who see it and they comment on the high quality of the result. For me it is a daily joy. My thanks to you and I shall certainly recommend your company.
Now that the conservatory is finished Sarah and I would like to express our appreciation of the work that has been done. Back in the summer when we decided we would like to build, we had no idea who to go to and no local friends to make recommendations. We looked on the internet using words such as “bespoke, quality and individual” By chance we came across Kingsholme and then of course met with you.
We said that we did not wish to be involved with any sub contractors but that the entire job should be project managed by you. We also made it clear that we wanted a firm price for the job which would not change unless we altered the brief. You delivered on both counts.
From day one of the ground works until the final finishing touches were made recently all the people representing Kingsholme have been excellent. Skilled tidy workers, always polite and a pleasure to have around. Whilst the job was not always straightforward, i.e. the guttering which had to be specially made, there was no question of you cutting corners or compromising your quality standards.
We are delighted with the final result and especially pleased that we selected your company. Many thanks to all the team and particularly you Mark.
The whole process from our initial meeting with you through to works on site through to completion was undertaken in an extremely professional manner, resulting in an excellent conservatory design, a standard of work that is first class and undertaken by friendly/helpful operatives. The attention to detail was evident at all time.
The co-ordination of the different work disciplines was particularly impressive with the general disruption during construction kept to an absolute minimum and the site being keep clean and tidy throughout the course of the works.
Michelle and I wish to express our appreciation for the service provided by you/your company and cannot recommend you highly enough.
The whole experience from start to finish was very pleasant and professional. There was no pressure or haggling on prices, this was in total contrast to other propective suppliers. Mark gave us some excellent design suggestions. The overall quality of workmanship was also first rate.
We have been very happy with the service provided, please keep up the good work!
Very pleased with general workmanship and helpful construction staff. Would be pleased to recommend your company to other people. Greatly appreciated Mark’s design of conservatory, blends in well with rear of house.
Thank you for making it a relatively easy experience for us! As mentioned to you previously, we are very pleased with the results.
We are really pleased with the conservatory and we will certainly recommend you.
We are very pleased with the final product, which looks excellent. Mark’s approach throughout was honest and helpful, in direct contrast to the many other sales people from other companies who were clearly only interested in securing the sale.
The fantastic reviews I see here reflect the experience we have had with Kingsholme. It has been faultless from the first contact through to completion of our orangery. The technical information on the website gave me confidence that the product is outstanding, based on years of experience. All of the team were outstanding, highly experienced tradesmen. The final product is of the highest quality in terms of design, materials and construction. There was absolutely no ‘sales’ involved and during my first call, I was given a ballpark figure based on the size of the space; the final cost was only higher because we increased the size and there were no hidden surprises. The first design we received was exactly what we wanted (they ‘got it’) and the only tweak we made was around the size of a side window. Mark agreed to take on some additional work inside the house, opening up a supporting wall between our kitchen and old dining room. I had struggled to get anyone to take this on, so was greatful to him for doing it. This proved to be quite a challenge for the team based on how the original wall was constructed and took a few more days that expected, however they worked constantly in horrible conditions until it was done. We didn’t have a lot of time to get involved in the project and that wasn’t an issue in the end as everything was taken care for us. It’s rare to say this of a company – we have not had a single issue with Kingsholme. Thank you to everyone involved.
We would wholeheartedly recommend this company. Every member of the team were polite and helpful, from our initial site meeting through to completion of the project. We feel that they offered a very high standard of work at a fair price. The design is top end and certainly comparable with the companies that advertise in House and Garden Magazine and buildings that we have seen exhibited at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show. From the groundwork team through to the decorator, every member of the team were highly experienced and meticulous with every detail of the work that they did to create a stunning orangery for us.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for all your help, assistance and understanding. It has been a pleasure dealing with you and we are delighted with the end result. If you wish to use us as a reference we would be more than happy to recommend you/ Kingsholme to prospective clients.
Excellent throughout; friendly, courteous employees. Good to your word regarding all aspects of the build.
Thanks for a good job – we are very happy with the end result.

We are really pleased with the end result, and would have no hesitation in recommending you to anymore of our friends who are thinking of having a conservatory.

Overall the work was done to a very professional standard, particularly groundworks, foundations and finish (plastering, flooring, electrics and heating) Care was taken to keep things tidy and to clean up afterwards. Very satisfactory!
Every Kingsholme project is individually designed, with styles ranging from traditionally detailed timber orangeries and conservatories to clean, contemporary extensions. Whether you require a complete new living space or a bespoke roof lantern, we can create a design that complements your Cambridgeshire home, introduces abundant natural light and provides a comfortable connection with the garden throughout the year.
An orangery or conservatory is generally considered an extension for planning purposes. Some projects can be constructed under permitted development rights, while others require a formal planning application. This will depend on factors including the dimensions and position of the proposed extension, the type of property, previous additions and any planning restrictions affecting the site.
Before developing a design, it is important to establish which permissions are likely to be required. Planning permission and Building Regulations approval are separate matters, and a project may need to comply with Building Regulations even when a planning application is unnecessary. General information about extending a home is available from the Planning Portal.
Properties in conservation areas and listed buildings require particularly careful consideration. Permitted development rights may be more restricted in some locations, while work that affects the special architectural or historic character of a listed building may also require listed building consent. A sympathetic design, appropriate materials and carefully considered architectural detailing can be essential to achieving a successful result.
Kingsholme can assist with the planning and Building Regulations process as part of our complete design-and-build service. Our detailed 3D CAD drawings clearly show the proposed orangery or conservatory in relation to the existing property and provide the information required to develop the design and support the relevant applications.
Considering these requirements at an early stage helps avoid unnecessary delays and ensures the finished extension is appropriate for both the property and its surroundings.
