Orangery portal frame
This orangery will feature large hardwood folding-sliding doors and narrow masonry pillars, therefore we need to use a steel portal frame to strengthen the structure and give the building rigidity.
The vertical columns are bolted to the foundations using resin-bonded steel studs. These columns are connected to the steel ring-beam and tied back to the main house. There are brick-ties welded to the post to connect the blocks.
The guys have used a hoist arrangement to lift the steel beams into place, and support props to correctly position them while they are bolted and welded together. The adapted carpet trolley in the foreground of the photo is one of the best items of equipment we’ve ever invested in; it make handling large steel and glulam beams, simpler and safer.
