This bespoke hardwood orangery replaced a dated conservatory that was difficult to use comfortably throughout the year. Designed to suit the existing property and its garden setting, the new room combines a substantial roof lantern, oak flooring and open connections to the house.
The owners enjoyed a lovely garden setting, but their existing conservatory had become a source of frustration. It overheated in summer, felt cold in winter and leaked during wet weather. Doors and windows were also becoming difficult to open.
The brief was to replace it with a more comfortable, practical room that made better use of its position overlooking the garden.
The property’s Green Belt location and previous extensions were important considerations when developing the proposal. Although the grounds could physically accommodate a larger building, the design needed to respond to the planning constraints identified for this project.
The proposed orangery provided a modest increase in floor space. The CAD drawing shows how its proportions and roof lantern would relate to the existing house.
The old conservatory was removed before new foundations were excavated and prepared for Building Control inspection. Openings into the house were temporarily boarded over for security and protection while the existing concrete floor was broken out.
With the new floor slab and base walls complete, the hardwood framework could be erected. This established the shape of the new room and its outlook onto the garden.
Glulam beams spanning more than nine metres formed a key part of the roof structure. These were built into the walls and supported by a steel beam above the orangery windows.
Once the hardwood lantern was fitted, work progressed to the electrical installation, ceiling plasterboarding and plaster finishes.
The owners chose to leave the main openings into the house without doors, retaining a single door at one end. This created an open connection between the orangery and the adjoining rooms.
Radiators, ceiling spotlights and oak flooring completed the interior, turning the former conservatory area into a finished living space.
The completed orangery provides a room for enjoying the garden throughout the seasons. Its hardwood windows and roof lantern bring daylight into the space, while the plastered ceiling and oak floor give it the character of an extension to the home.
The final external work included the path and step, completing the connection between the orangery and the garden.

The fantastic reviews I see here reflect the experience we have had with Kingsholme. It has been faultless from the first contact through to completion of our orangery. The technical information on the website gave me confidence that the product is outstanding, based on years of experience. All of the team were outstanding, highly experienced tradesmen. The final product is of the highest quality in terms of design, materials and construction. There was absolutely no ‘sales’ involved and during my first call, I was given a ballpark figure based on the size of the space; the final cost was only higher because we increased the size and there were no hidden surprises. The first design we received was exactly what we wanted (they ‘got it’) and the only tweak we made was around the size of a side window. Mark agreed to take on some additional work inside the house, opening up a supporting wall between our kitchen and old dining room. I had struggled to get anyone to take this on, so was grateful to him for doing it. This proved to be quite a challenge for the team based on how the original wall was constructed and took a few more days than expected, however they worked constantly in horrible conditions until it was done. We didn’t have a lot of time to get involved in the project and that wasn’t an issue in the end as everything was taken care for us. It’s rare to say this of a company – we have not had a single issue with Kingsholme. Thank you to everyone involved.
