This contemporary orangery replaced an ageing conservatory with a larger space designed around clear garden views and a modern finish. Aluminium bifold doors, full-height glazing and a glazed roof lantern bring light into the room, while a concealed structural beam allows the ceiling to run flush into the existing kitchen.
The client’s existing conservatory was too cold in winter and too hot in summer. She wanted a replacement that offered a more contemporary appearance and improved thermal performance.
The brief was to create a larger orangery with a stronger connection to the house and clearer views of the garden.
The proposed design combined full-height glazing with six-panel aluminium bifold doors across the front. A flat roof surrounding a glazed lantern gave the extension its clean, contemporary profile.
Internal visuals explored furniture arrangements and showed how the new room would connect with the kitchen. The existing utility doorway was to be closed, while the main opening into the house would be enlarged.
The old conservatory was demolished and new foundations excavated. Surface-water drainage was rerouted before a suspended concrete floor was installed.
This work established the base for the larger extension and prepared the site for the structural frame and masonry.
A new steel beam was installed within the existing house’s ceiling and floor space. Concealing it at this level allowed the orangery ceiling to continue into the kitchen without a beam projecting below it.
The beam had to be fitted early in the build, before the new roof restricted access. Engineering-brick piers were constructed to carry the concentrated loads at its ends.
A separate steel portal frame provided stability for the orangery, with its posts bolted to the foundations before the surrounding masonry was completed.
The timber roof framework was constructed and insulated, followed by the installation of the powder-coated aluminium roof lantern.
Thermally broken aluminium windows and bifold doors completed the glazing. A matching aluminium fascia gave the roof edge a neat finish and continued the contemporary detailing around the exterior.
Following the electrical installation, the ceiling was plasterboarded and decorated. Large-format floor tiles, approximately one metre square, were laid throughout the new room.
The finished ceiling runs flush with the existing kitchen ceiling, revealing the benefit of the concealed structural beam. Together with the glazing and roof lantern, this creates a bright, visually connected space.
The completed orangery gives the client a calm, bright room with wide views of the garden and bifold doors opening onto the newly paved area.
The house windows were also replaced to match the orangery, bringing consistency to the appearance of the original building and the new extension.

The technical information on the website gave me confidence that the product is outstanding, based on years of experience. All of the team were outstanding, highly experienced tradesmen. The final product is of the highest quality in terms of design, materials and construction. There was absolutely no ‘sales’ involved and during my first call, I was given a ballpark figure based on the size of the space; the final cost was only higher because we increased the size and there were no hidden surprises. The first design we received was exactly what we wanted (they ‘got it’) and the only tweak we made was around the size of a side window. Mark agreed to take on some additional work inside the house, opening up a supporting wall between our kitchen and old dining room. I had struggled to get anyone to take this on, so was grateful to him for doing it. This proved to be quite a challenge for the team based on how the original wall was constructed and took a few more days than expected, however they worked constantly in horrible conditions until it was done. We didn’t have a lot of time to get involved in the project and that wasn’t an issue in the end as everything was taken care for us.
