Whether it be an orangery from specialists like ourselves, or a flat-roofed extension with a skylight constructed by a general builder, the glazed lantern will be the focal point of the room and has the potential to add a real “wow-factor”.
There are many types of roof lanterns on the market, but it is worth considering whether in the context of the overall build budget, a relatively small premium for a luxury timber lantern will make a huge difference to the end result.

Timber vs Aluminium/uPVC
For many builds, a modern aluminium lantern is the correct choice. There are many examples in our gallery of stunning contemporary sunrooms with anthracite coloured aluminium lanterns that were are extremely proud of. However, if the design of the building is less avant-garde, it is questionable whether a modern style lantern is really desirable. Arguably, for a contemporary design to really work, one has to be fully committed to it; an aluminium lantern in a “safe” colour like white tends not to hit the mark and a modern lantern on a traditionally furnished room can look out of place.
uPVC lanterns can offer good value on larger sizes, but can be quite bulky and feel less than luxurious.
Frameless glass lanterns are interesting and could be a good option for smaller sizes, however there are question marks over their durability and longevity of desirability
Over the 21 years we that have been installing hardwood glazed roofs, the basic aesthetics have barely changed. There have been great improvements in glass technology, hardwood paints and weatherproofing details, but the overall internal feel has pretty much remained the same.
